Surah Luuqmaan

The title of this Surah has been derived from Verse 12. Hazrat Luuqmaan (A.S) was a person of great wisdom, well known in Arabia before the birth of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W).

Once the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) was shown a book of wisdom by one of His Companions (Hazrat Sovaid bin Samit (R.A)) who embraced Islam in Madina Shareef in which it showed that Hazrat Luuqmaan (A.S) had compiled a great treasure of advises for profound social education of men.

The Holy Prophet (S.A.W) asked this Companion to go through the Holy Quran. That pious Companion (R.A) was convinced that the Holy Quran was a much greater treasure of wisdom providing logical advises with Divine guidance to just, peaceful, and prosperous human co-existence.

The Holy Quran treats Hazrat Luuqmaan (A.S) as a symbol of wisdom. Therefore, Allah (S.W.T) revealed this Surah in His name to assign Him a Divine importance of having preached His son the Unity of Allah (S.W.T) and gratefulness to the Creator of the worlds.

He (A.S) also advised his son to desist from disbelief and fully rely on Allah (S.W.T). Then in Verse 13 Hazrat Luuqmaan (A.S) again is shown to advise His son never to associate any object or equate anybody with Allah (S.W.T) as it is a great sin of man against Oneness of Allah (S.W.T).

In view of this, the title of this Surah is very important describing the correct belief of great men in the purity of Divine Unity. Such pure believers will be highly rewarded by Allah (S.W.T) as Hazrat Luuqmaan (A.S) has been appreciated through this Surah.

Surah Luuqmaan is basically a Divine recognition of the importance of knowledge and utility of wisdom for mankind. Wisdom should lead to praise of Allah (S.W.T) with piety and righteousness to make individuals humble and grateful to their Creator in all circumstances.

It is mentioned in a Hadith of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) that, “Acquire knowledge, it enables its professor to distinguish right from wrong; it lights the way to Heaven. It is our friend in the desert, our company in solitude and companion when friendless. It guides us to happiness, it sustains us in misery, it is an ornament amongst friends and an armour against enemies.”
